The Packard Motor Museum exhibits were collected over more than 60 years by museum founder, the late Graeme Craw, and had its roots in his fascination with the industrial revolution- a time of innovation and invention which saw developments in engineering and automobile construction that changed the world and shaped New Zealand into the country it is today.
Graeme Craw also had a passion for the prestigious Packard marque, which for many years was regarded as the epitome of elegance in American automobile design and engineering. The Packard Motor Museum now has more than 50 Packard cars which form the basis of the museum collection, along with 65 classic motorcycles, English cars, trucks, army vehicles and militaria, fire engines, steam and traction engines, earth moving machinery and more.
The exhibits also show the changes that took place as the world moved from horse- and oxen-power to modern machinery such as tractors, bulldozers and heavy earth-moving machinery used by the people who built New Zealand’s infrastructure.
The Packard Motor Museum is situated just 11 km from Whangarei in the old Dairy Factory at Maungatapere on State Highway 14 on the way to Dargaville.
A visit to the museum is an engaging hands-on way for adults and children of all ages to explore New Zealand’s motoring and engineering heritage.
Tours are flexible and take between one and two hours. Entry is $20 adults, $10 children and the museum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am-4pm.
