The majority of the fishing is located in the Slovenian Julian Alps which are home to glacial streams. The sky blue hue to the water makes this a truly spectacular location in which to fish. The Soca River and its tributaries are renowned throughout the world and are a true test of even the most accomplished fly fisher. Other notable rivers in this area that can be explored are the Tolminka and Idrijca rivers. These too pose a significant challenge to the experienced fly fisher's abilities.
Chalk streams are also a feature of Slovenia with the Krka and Unec available to Go Active Tours. These streams are renowned for their abundance of trophy trout and grayling.
Guests may also hone their abilities before venturing on to these aforementioned rivers by fishing on the Sava Bohinjka or Radovna, which are less challenging and very good rivers in their own right. The amount of rivers available to fish is astounding and will satisfy even the most discerning angler in terms of beauty, difficulty, productivity and the sheer pleasure that the alpine climate bestows on you.
The biodiversity of this special country is mirrored in the number of game fish species present, with brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling, brook trout and the famous Danube salmon all present in abundance. The area is also home to the marble trout, which is one of the defining species of the region and the cornerstone of Slovenian fly fishing.
The season vary in Slovenia, but there is always fishing available. The general season lasts from March to November. Trout are dominant during these months with grayling also present. The Danube salmon come to the fore in November, right through until February and we can tailor your itinerary to take in the rivers with the most most abundance of fish in relation to the season.
Go Active Tours actively encourages catch and release on these pristine rivers. The rivers are self-sustained, but a small number of fish are stocked.
